Stove Maintenance

Like any appliance your stove will need regular maintenance if you are to get the best out of it. Follow this easy ten point maintenance schedule and your stove will reward you with many many years of optimum performance:

1. Clean the glass regularly using wet newspaper (once the glass is cold) or proprietary glass cleaner or oven cleaner if soot is baked on. Check for cracks and if cracked replace the glass immediately.

2. Check door seals and replace fire rope if it is worn or frayed. The door should seal sufficiently tightly to grip a sheet of paper.

3. Check internal firebricks and replace if badly chipped or crumlbling. A cracked brick does not necessarily need to be replaced.

4. Check internal seals and renew fire rope or re-seal with fire cement as appropriate.

5. Check that the riddle mechanism is working freely.

6. Check grate and replace if badly cracked or warped.

7. Ensure that there are no holes in the ash pan and replace as necessary.

8. On cast iron stoves brush off any rust with a wire brush and re-paint with heat-proof stove paint or stove blacking.

9. When the stove is not in use leave a vent open to prevent build up of condensation in the chimney.

10. Have chimney swept once a year.
